I separated the tune into VERSE-CHORUS arrangements, i.e., Verse 1 & Chorus = 1 arrangement, Verse 2 & Chorus = 1 arrangement, etc… I did this to make the arrangements break nicely for a very well-organized Jam Session Notebook… It’s easier for beginners and seniors to know where they’re at if each Verse-Chorus is an arrangement unto itself. My latest effort with the Text Tool and the Lyrics Tool are evident in my Fakebook arrangement of “Wabash Cannonball” for the Mandolin.

IT WAS COOL! It took a ton of effort and time out of inserting text under solos or melodies… There are a few small things you need to figure out doing it this way, like how to break words into syllables and whether to use hyphens or not when doing that… You also have to pay attention to the melody notes on the staff, that they accurately reflect what is being sung, i.e., even though a CHORUS is nearly always the same (because the lyrics themselves don’t change), a VERSE may have variations in the rhythm of the notes, which need to be observed in how you break your words and syllables over those melody notes and variations in melody notes. I’d been doing my lyrics and text insertion for years already and wasn’t looking forward to a ‘new way’… I felt I was ‘set in my ways’, you know?(!) At some point in time, I did an arrangement for my brother and I decided to give the “Lyrics Tool” a shot. However, at some point, I noticed the “Lyrics Tool” had appeared… It was a new way to insert lyrics into any arrangement, such as a Fakebook arrangement, where the lyrics are included, especially under a solo or melody.Īt first, I ignored the “Lyrics Tool”. That never bothered me as I’m used to putting a lot of effort into every arrangement I produce. Everything worked fine with the Text Tool, however, it is painstaking work, because each word has to be typed and inserted one at a time.
For quite a few years now, when I’m making a “Fakebook” arrangement for the Banjo, I have always used the “Text Tool” and used the ‘above text’ or ‘below text’ options to put the text above or below the staff… When I first started doing this, I don’t believe the “Lyrics Tool” was available yet.
